So, why don’t insurance companies pay more for laser treatments?Procedures are classified by outcome, not technology: Insurance companies care more about the result than the tools used to achieve that result. Whether you use a laser or a traditional handpiece for a filling, the outcome (a filled tooth) is the same, so the reimbursement does not change. Read Time:14 Minute, 16 Second The strongest practices understand that the hygiene team comprises critical partners in patient health and practice success. Attracting and retaining the right team members will help ensure practice continuity, while also inviting innovation and collaboration to keep your business moving forward. The admin does not understand why the clinical team takes so long to chart. The treatment coordinator thinks their patient should come before all other patients. Doctors do not know how much “behind the scenes” their new ideas create. Practice…

As a child, I would take my fingernail and scrape white “junk” off my teeth. That was plaque building up on my pearly whites. I wasn’t a great brusher then. But, in my defense, I really didn’t understand how to brush any better. I thought it normal to wake up with a fuzzy feeling on my teeth, and to again feel that coating midafternoon. I brushed with the standard commercial toothpaste like I was told, and trusted that was sufficient. Little did I know plaque, or as we now call it, “biofilm” was actually alive and regrowing on my teeth.…

The American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) recently published a new set of clinical practical guidelines on opioid prescriptions for children with acute pain, and they want dentists to take note. The AAP includes dentists in its definition “pediatricians and other pediatric health care providers,” as they provide care for children and adolescents with acute pain.  But is there ever a reason to prescribe opioids for a pediatric patient? In 2023, the American Dental Association (ADA) released its own guideline for the management of acute dental pain in children. It does not give guidance on prescribing opioids medications, other than to…
